World Cup 2022: Portugal 3-2 Ghana – Ronaldo, Felix and Leo score

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in five FIFA World Cups as Portugal kicked off their campaign with a thrilling victory over Ghana.

Ronaldo was playing for the first time since his controversial TV interview last week and his subsequent firing by Manchester United following the comments.

The 37-year-old scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, after he was fumbled in the box by Southampton Ghanaian defender Mohamed Salisu.

Captain Ronaldo had two chances early on, but a low shot was taken by Lawrence Atti Ziggy and also headed at the far post.

The striker disallowed a goal to push Alexandre Dzeko while at the other end, Ghana did not have a single shot in the first half.

The Africans improved in the second half when Mohamed Koudos chipped in close to the far post and got their reward when Andre Ayew equalized from close range.

But Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points – Joao Felix converted a delightful shot and substitute Rafael Leao calmly fired just seconds after coming on.

Usman Buhari nodded in a belated consolation for Ghana and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa put the ball in, apparently unaware that Inaki Williams was behind him, but after racing to intercept the Ghanaian striker slid in at the crucial moment and a deflected shot was cleared off the line.

The victory means that Portugal tops Group H after that Uruguay and South Korea tied without goals earlier on Thursday.

Ronaldo grabs the headlines again

The focus before this match was on just one man – Ronaldo.

The veteran striker came into the tournament with a cloud over his head yet An explosive TalkTV interview He said he felt “betrayed” by Manchester United.

Unhappy with what he said, the Premier League club began the process of terminating his contract, which was confirmed on Tuesday.

But the player would make headlines for all the right reasons this time around, as he outlasted the great Pele, Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose to stand alone by scoring in five different editions of the tournament.

Fans were on their feet in anticipation every time Ronaldo got close to the ball and spurred on when his second-half penalty – which came after relatively missed chances in the first period – blasted home.

He was also a record 118 international goals conceded, including eight in the World Cup group stage, although he is the player who has scored the most goals without scoring in the knockout stage.

Former West Ham and Swansea striker Ayew equalized after reducing Mohamed Kudos to extend Ghana’s scoring run in the last six World Cup matches.

Felix’s imposing finish and Liao’s tense effort seemed to seal the points for Portugal with 10 minutes remaining.

Substitute Bockarie entered and celebrated with Ronaldo “Sio”. Otto Ado’s team would have been happy to equalize and almost got it, had it not been for Williams’ misstep.
