In the same way that companies are profitable and organizations are not, grad students are also not worthwhile.
The current economic climate has increased the number of available graduate school positions. In the United States, it is estimated that there are about 421,000 PhDs in various disciplines enrolled in graduate school at a time when there aren’t enough jobs to go around. In addition to these graduates, there are also over 4 million people attending graduate programs throughout the world, many of whom do so because they want to contribute to society. It should be noted however, that no matter how great someone’s contribution may be, it doesn’t make up for their total lack of actual value as a human being.
To put this into perspective; if you could hire 1 million people with an average salary of $50k per year (which is what is needed for any person to make a positive contribution toward society), then you could hire 1 in every .25 bil people who have a PhD from any institution on Earth! This means that there are potentially 820 million PhDs out there who could contribute positively towards society by giving their time and energy towards something else. In other words – just one person with a PhD has the potential to make 8 billion dollars worth of “contributions” towards society (just by working for an average salary). The problem is that only about 12% of these degrees (or 5%) ever leads anywhere useful or important whatsoever after college – which means that 90% of all PhDs will simply die with nothing but worthless degrees behind them and irreversibly impact future generations negatively as well as turn millions away from higher education altogether.
